She found herself working at a shop that sold glassmaking materials and allowed local artists to rent benches to bring their art to life. But at the time, she knew nothing about it. She ended up befriending several of the artists there, who spent time teaching her the terminology and showing her the ropes until she got the go-ahead to try it herself. She started with coldworking, which evolved into flameworking. “The first piece I made was actually a set of 500 one-inch glass rings. I had no idea what I was doing but I was given the task to cut glass tubing on a table saw, then arrange them on a graphite plate and flame polish them as a group with a hand torch. This month’s featured glass artist is Shawn Armour of Dohn Joe Glass — based in Seattle,Washington. Get to know more about him and all of his intricately designed pieces in this exclusive Heady Pages interview. Shawn Armour first took an interest in glassblowing when his friend Chris made it his career. After spending countless days watching Chris blow many different types of glass in his garage, he invited Shawn to help him make glass pipes out of borosilicate glass in 2014. His first functional piece was a chillum — something different than what Chris was making. He found that he absolutely loved the entire process and continued to make chillums and other things, like marbles, pendants and spoons. “Glass is unique to these other mediums in that you can’t force it to do anything. This includes everything from your attention, what you are working with, and how your studio is setup. To work with glass you have to provide a very unique environment to make it react how you want. It’s like learning a dance or developing a relationship with the glass where you work together to get it where you want,” Shawn said. “Like many arts, but especially glass, […]
In this month’s instalment of our Featured Glass Artist series, Andrew Tischler is giving away a beautiful pendant. Enter to win below. Andrew Tischler of Andrew Tischler Glass took the first steps into glassmaking in 2008 at the age of 19. His father had signed him and his siblings up for a week-long flameworking class at Peters Valley School for Craft, but if it wasn’t for that family outing, Andrew would’ve never pursued glass artistry. These days, he’s ecstatic that he did. A professional in the space for over 14 years, he’s had plenty of time to explore and experiment, unlocking his art style and creating unique, psychedelic designs. His designs all feature intricate details and unique patterns that come from a highly refined technique. Andrew prefers to also utilize a natural color palette, drawing inspiration from things like the coloring on beetle elytra, whirlpools, galaxies, and even the stunning subtle textures found in the patterns on leaves. Jacksonville’s Ash “The Pizza Boy ” developed an interest in glass after spending so much time around the artistic medium while working at a headshop and developing stickers and apparel out of his art. After just two short years, he developed a unique flamework art style from his background in graffiti artwork. “I’ve always worked as a pizza boy for as long as I’ve been employed. My design company and artistic aesthetic was always reflective of that environment and culture. So when I got my torch I did the only thing I knew how to do… and started cranking out pipes!” he said. Ash is a pipe maker by trade, developing unique and vibrant pendants, carb caps, dabbers, pipes, bubblers, and pipes with a deep-rooted appreciation for street art and culture. His highly realistic pizza pendants and carb caps are the pinnacle of his style and attitude.
